Vancouver Riot Reveals Shining Stars

Bookmark and Share

By now we've all heard about and seen photos of the post-hockey-game-loss riot in Vancouver. What a shame. What a terrible, unsportsman-like, embarassment-to-all-Canadians shame.

Despite the horrific acts of vandalism, we must remember that Vancouver is not to blame. Vancouverites are not to blame. You know the saying, 'A few good apples spoils the bunch', right? Well, a few dumb, selfish, drunken idiots who obviously lack perspective and common sense are to blame. They've burned, bashed, and destroyed. From the sounds of it, the City of Vancouver will suffer enormous economical losses - I cannot imagine how this unfortunate event would draw visitors to the city - but rather, I would assume, keep potential visitors away. What a difference than from the Olympics just a few short months ago.

However, there is one shining star amidst the crazy mess.  Actually, there are more than 10,000 shining stars.  Vancouverites. The people of Vancouver themselves are the shining stars.

The gracious people of Vancouver have volunteered to clean the ugly mess the drunken idiots left last night. Over 14,000 people - true Canucks - have joined the Post Riot Clean Up Facebook Page. The many volunteers began cleaning the streets this morning and will continue as allowed to do so. It is they who deserve the world's attention this week. It is they who deserve pats on the backs. It is they who show the spirit of grace and sportsmanship.

The volunteers have undone my feeling of embarassment and have reinstated my pride in being Canadian.  I am so proud of them!

  1. Kudos to all of those volunteers who've stepped up to prove that Vancouver isn't all rotten apples!

It really does show that there are more good people than bad in the world, doesn't it?
