If we're going to be driving more than an hour one way, we take these essential items:
Sketch pads and colored pencils - the kids spend a crazy amount of time creating masterpieces in the car - we keep one box (with attached lid that snaps shut) between the kids, so they can share it. The box also contains at least 2 erasers and a pencil sharpener. At times it contains small stencils.

Books - the kids choose 2 or 3 picture book each and will swap them back and forth.
Leapster and Games - the Leapsters stay put away 100% of the time at home - they are for travel only, so the kids don't tire of playing the same few games. When the games go on sale, I try to find a coupon to use, so I can get a $30 game for about half price.
Silks - our kids love to play with silks (or other types of whispy scarves). In the car, we use them to block the sun when the kids are trying to sleep, the kids cover up with them while sleeping, they build a 'fort' between them or just hide beneath them if they need some time to themselves. They are great, because they can be squished into your purse or the pocket in the door, the kid's cup holder, etc.

Audio Books - these are probably the most important of all. I used to read novels out loud while hubby drove, but I had too many books to keep track of, and it eliminated all adult conversation. Thanks to i-tunes and the public library, I can now load up our ipod and voila! Current favorites are: Tales from the Forest, Paws and Tales, and Family Folk Tales, but itunes has TONS of choices. I urge you to take a look there, or at your public library for free downloads. Audio books keep the kids entertained, and hubby and I can have full conversations - honest!
We'd love to hear how you keep your kids entertained while you're road tripping.
